This month we are welcoming:

Simon Heyes, CEO, Kite Power Systems
John Birtley, Founder, Napoto

Kite Power Systems was incorporated in November last year when the project secured £5 million investment from E.ON, Schlumberger and Shell Technology Ventures. This was followed by an investment of £2 million by the Scottish Investment Bank in March.

The KPS system features two giant kites each up to 70 square metres, which fly up to an altitude of 450m. By achieving flight speeds of up to 45m/s in 9m/s winds, the kite’s tether tension causes the line to rapidly spool out from a drum, which drives a generator producing electricity. As one kite descends, the other rises in tandem, meaning that the electricity can be generated almost constantly. This technology has the potential to transform the global offshore wind generation market, as it is cheaper to manufacture and requires less construction and installation material than conventional wind turbines.

Heliex has developed a way to harness energy from so-called “wet steam”, the type of vapour you can see when a kettle boils, traditionally lost as waste heat in industrial processes. The company designs, manufactures and supplies patented Steam Expander Systems that generate electricity using waste heat and steam from industrial processes.

Heliex systems work where traditional systems don’t and so what they have is a disruptive, transformative process. Their machines are already being used in biomass systems, dairies, food factories, distilleries and incinerators.

Napoto was started with one very simple idea: to look after the little guy. As parents themselves, Napoto wanted to protect their children online. The first sep is to reliable identify what is not appropriate for children to be exposed to. So they created SafetyNet that uses artificial intelligence to categorise content in real time.

After analysing what solutions exist it was clear that black lists is todays way of content filtering. Napoto’s SafetyNet strength lies in the fact that it is not a list at all. More than 13,000 websites are launched every day making black lists obsolete before they are published.

Napoto’s SafetyNet differs because they can achieve real-time categorisation using artificial intelligence. Their sophisticated infratstructure is constantly growing, learning and evolving.
