This month we are welcoming: Stuart Cassells, General Manager, The Famous Grouse Experience and Fiona Brown, Business Development Manager, Sandemans New Europe
When he founded the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Stuart Cassells created the biggest Scottish music act on the planet, now he is turning his attention from the bagpipes to another national symbol – whisky!
Cassell’s career as a bagpiper was cut short in 2011 after he was diagnosed with “focal dystonia”, more commonly known as writers’ cramp or musicians’ cramp.
Faced with not being able to earn his living through playing the pipes, Cassells sat down to plan his next move. An option that held great appeal was a career in the whisky industry. With no experience he struggled to find a job, until a friend pointed out the Saltire Fellowship, a training programme run by the Saltire Foundation. One of Cassells mandatory projects while on this programme was to work with the Edrington Group and look at the stock model for the Glenturret distillery. After building a model that he predicted would generate four-to-five times more profit, the group offered him a chance to give it a try!
Cassells sees a lot of connections between his two careers and says that there aree a lot of correlations between whisky and music – both are selling Scotland!
